Did you board at one of the UK’s top private schools old chap? No? Me neither. Yet this year’s WitTank team, who centre their material around the banalities of these elite schools, don’t seem to care how inaccessible some of their material may be. Toffs, bullies, teachers and poshrituals are sent up in a series of sketches and gags, and the trio work hard to keep the laughs coming. Many giggles were had, but I felt a little out-the-loop given that my only reference to their antics is the Harry Potter films.
Whilst some of the sketches were rather fun, a through line was distinctly lacking. This is not always problematic, yet it did leave me slightly perplexed as to the point of it all. This show was not particularly clever or observant; rather, the Tori-boys of the modern world seem out-dated, out of place in this multicultural, multi-classed modern world. Perhaps this was the very point that the show was trying to make. Still, WitTank remains slick and energetic, and whilst I’m sure the premise and basis of this show will appeal to many, it is a long way off from setting the world on fire.
