Comedy sketch duo Freya Parker and Celeste Dring come together to bring their new show, Lazy Susan: Extreme Humans, to the fringe, generating a tidal wave of excitement amongst both new and regular fringe-goers with characters that are truly bonkers, and material that is astutely observational.
The pair paint a vivid picture of individuals that are often on the fringes of society, including Brummy-Geordie couple Viv and Steve; a Bridget-Jonesesque call centre worker who somehow finds herself in many a pickle, leaving her crying into her diary; two mega Northern puppets that must get through a disastrous wedding; and the Yorkshire Terrier – a celebrity with a bone to pick with the paps. In fact, this show is so jam-packed full of hilarious characters, accurately sketched and lovingly bestowed on the audience, that you really feel as though you are getting your money’s worth.
Despite the constant (if necessary) disappearance of the actors behind a small black screen, which occasionally left me impatient to get onto the next sketch, when the ensuing chapter did kick off, it was worth the wait. Parker and Dring have perfect comic timing, and imbue some of their roles with real emotion – so much so that if their impressions and caricatures weren’t so funny, I’d more than likely be moved. Perhaps it is this skill that make the young pair so likeable, and talented, and with comedy gold such as this, there is the promise of much greater things to come.
